Outdoor therapy
I offer therapy sessions outdoors, sometimes known as ‘walk and talk’ counselling or ecotherapy. The natural environment can be anything from a backdrop to what might otherwise feel like a conventional counselling session, to a co-therapist and central part of our work together.
A growing body of research is showing how nourishing being outdoors in nature can be for human mental health.
I work outdoors in areas of woodland, waterside, hill and heath in and around Runcorn and Frodsham in Cheshire. Places where we can connect with natural cycles, with a world outside of ourselves and with the environments we evolved to be in. Nature offers an expansive space in which you can express your most difficult thoughts and feelings and feel held and nurtured. A place where you can explore the big questions in life.
Working outdoors adds an additional healing element to my counselling approach, which is grounded in the principles of empathy, warmth and acceptance. I offer you a space where you can experience the magic of being fully heard and understood and accepted as you are. This approach guides you to connecting with your own wisdom about who you are, how you relate to others and what you want in life.
If you choose to work with me outdoors, we will discuss potential areas to meet. Although this type of counselling is sometimes called walk & talk, in fact we may sometimes sit on benches or we can take folding camp chairs. I aim to make it as accessible as possible so please do get in touch to discuss your needs. We’ll have a back-up plan of working online or in a therapy room if you choose to if, for example, the weather is particularly bad - or you’re feeling under the weather.
There’s more information on some of the common questions around this mode of therapy at my blog post: Stepping Out.
